Laser-Cut/Engraved Wood Shogi (Japanese Chess) Set Bilingual
The Ultimate Way to learn the ancient japanese game of Shogi!
This is a 40-piece set for the Japanese board game Shogi, known as Japanese Chess. Each piece is precision laser-engraved and laser-cut from American hardwood, and hand-finished with tung oil for a beautiful natural finish. These items are completely made in the USA by Omaha-based studio Silver Compass Designs.
Each piece has the traditional Japanese characters (kanji) laser-engraved into their faces, as well as the English piece name engraved directly beneath the character (the English names were chosen to correspond to their well-known names in International Shogi - and their equivalents in International Chess - and not as literal translations of the Japanese kanji). Because in Shogi the majority of the pieces promote by flipping over, the English piece name on the promoted side of each piece is easily distinguishable from their non-promoted equivalents.
As some English speakers sometimes refer to promoted bishops as horses and promoted rooks as dragons, after their Japanese names, and generally use the Japanese name tokin for promoted pawns, if you like we can replace the english inscriptions for these promoted pieces with these alternate names at no additional charge. Per standard Shogi, the individual pieces vary in size, with the King measure 1" (26mm) in width and 1.125 (28mm) in length, and the Pawns (Tokins) measuring 0.83"(21mm) in width and 0.94" (24mm) in length, made for play on any standard Shogiban (Shogi board). All pieces are 0.16" (4mm) thick.
All of these Bilingual Shogi sets are made to order and can take up to a month to create an entire set . As the sets are made from natural American wood, the wood grain pattern on the pieces will vary from the pictures shown
